Buying a Textbook Vs Renting a Textbook

transcript

In Today's video, I want to cover the pros and cons of buying a textbook verses renting a text book.

Now, If you've never rented a text book, you do this through a store, usually for a specific period of time, usually a semester's length. It's a fraction of the cost of buying a text book. I love renting my textbooks whenever I can.

The only time I really buy a textbook is when I am going to need that text book later on in my career. So for example, I'm an accounting student, so my intermediate accounting book is a book I'm going to need for the rest of my career, so I bought that book.

However I've had to take some general ed classes along my degree path. I didn't keep those books.

Those are the books that I would have rented. Back then I bought them, but I sold them back. But, anyway, if i would have done it now, general ed courses I would have rented them. Because it is so much cheaper.

However for my actual accounting courses, I'm buying the textbooks because I want to keep specific ones.

So, the pros of renting a textbook are that it is lower in cost, you can rent it for a specific period of time, that will cover your entire semester. However, you don't get to keep the book.

The pros of buying a textbooks is that you get to keep the text book, but it can be very expensive. And can get very expensive if you have 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 classes you are buying books for.

So when do you buy a textbook and when do you rent a textbook? Well, like I said, if it's a class that you aren't going to need, or the information is not something you are going to need throughout your career, I would rent it every time.

It is just so much cheaper than buying a textbook. Then you can just send it back and be done with it. But if it's information that you're going to be using everyday of your career, buy the textbook because it's an excellent reference source.

I hope this has helped you understand some of the pros and cons of renting a textbook verses buying a textbook. And that it will help you make some of those choices.
